Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. As an only girl She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation, she attended Temple University. There, Scott worked two jobs as she was taking classes in secondary education. She was hoping to be a English teacher at the high school level. The dream, however was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studies and was an aide to teachers. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work in live poetry readings. She later joined forces together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by them. In a Roots show she made her debut in the spotlight as an artist. After that, she got collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experiences performing. She was the very first artist to sign with Hidden Beach Recordings.
